๐ Maze.
As you descend into the maze you get more specialized. Each turn commits you further, narrows your options. The path through the maze is linear, but the solution can only be appreciated in two dimensions, from above.
Jack is seen gazing over the model, stupefied. He has the god's-eye view, the cinematic perspective, handed to him directly. And he just stares. He can't metabolize it. The two-dimensional solution is right there, but typographic man only knows how to move through space sequentially, one corridor at a time. He's literate in the wrong language.
The maze is a diagram of how linear, specialist thinking works. Jack in the maze is Jack in genre, Jack in the novel, Jack in "the writing"โdeeper and deeper into a single channel until he freezes.
Daedalus Inverted
In the myth, the father builds the labyrinth and survives; the son dies escaping itโflying too high, too ambitious. Kubrick inverts it: the son escapes by thinking backward, retracing steps, a kind of rewinding. Rewinding is a film technique, not a literary one. The father freezes inside his own structure. The architect dies in the architecture.
Wendy
She's the contested ground, the reader who also watches. Danny doesn't argue her out of loyalty to Jack; he just shows her. REDRUM in the mirror. The visions she finally starts to see.
The image converts her.
