Permission-escalating modals are the new absolutely fucked up dark pattern, and they’re everywhere. Chrome has been pestering me for months to grant “local network access,” and NO! It’s framed as something harmless — “discovery” of “printers,” “casting devices,” whatever — but in reality it’s about normalizing the evil empire of nosy motherfuckers getting ambient access to everything in your life. The worst part is how these requests are engineered to trick you or wear you down: no context, repeated nagging if you decline, no way to opt out of the relentless badgering, and the charlatan’s suggestion that you’re missing out if you don’t comply.
