In one scene Jack throws a tennis ball down the hallway towards an authentic looking Native American rug hanging on the wall. The rug has the dimensions of a cinema screen. The pattern on the rug is

forming a design that appears to have 2 rows and 3 columns but 7 inner diamonds, indicating the impossible mathematical relation

2 ร— 3 = 7.

Danny's tricycle is abandoned in the center of a circular Native American design on the floor. Jack's tennis ball flies right over it, bouncing off the wall where the rug hangs. The circular design on the floor is where Dick Hallorann will later die, murdered with an axe by Jack.

In the novel, Jack and a drinking buddy run over a child's bicycle while driving drunk. Jack is the wheelman. The text leaves the possibility open: was it an abandoned bicycle, or did they hit a child? We only have Jack's testimony.

The tricycle in the hallway rhymes with this. Abandoned. In the path of something Jack propels forward.

After hurling the tennis ball, Jack walks directly over to the model of the labyrinth, as if on a beeline to the thing that will kill him.
